A Two-Century Tradition Built on Steel

ASA History

The storied ASA tradition dates back to 1806, when Francis Edmonds founded Swedes Iron on Long Wharf in Portland, Maine. The company has evolved considerably since then, but our deep commitment to quality, customer satisfaction, and integrity has never wavered.

Today, we are proud to be part of Nova Steel, another long-established leader in the North American steel industry.

Our focus has, and always will be, to help build a better America through innovation and solid long-term partnerships. Our extensive in-house inventory provides us the ability to respond quickly to large or highly technical orders that support U.S. Navy shipbuilding, truck tank manufacturing, large scale stadium seating, U.S. National Defense, precision machining and so much more.

We haven’t lost sight of our roots, either — even with over 200 years of experience and growth — we’re equally proud to support local small job-shops as we are to support large federal projects and initiatives.

Inventory management and value-add services

With five regional locations and a company owned fleet of trucks servicing the greater Northeast of the United States, we are able to support our customer base beyond simply in a single territory. The company continues to explore new opportunities in emerging markets as well – ensuring we can continue to grow and serve as an extension of our customers’ operations.

Our inventory management and value added services like kitting can improve customer operations by freeing up cash flow, reducing utilized floor space, and overall improve manufacturing processes. Plus, our just-in-time (JIT) delivery places the majority of orders at your doorstep in 24 to 48 hours.
