Why a 200-Year-Old American Steel Fabricator is Going into Solar

American Steel and Aluminum’s high-quality domestic manufacturing is a natural fit for the ground screw foundation.

As a team of engineers with experience fabricating metals for everything from data centers to submarines to robotics, we at American Steel and Aluminum (ASA) know how to recognize patterns, problems, and trends. Years ago, we realized there was a paradox at the heart of America’s solar boom.

Projects are being greenlit at a record pace while energy demand is surging nationwide. Yet developers and engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) teams keep facing the same bottlenecks, starting with foundations. Due to international supply chain constraints, shipping delays, and fragmented production processes, materials delivery has become second only to permitting as a project constraint. For foundational products like ground screws, the anchors that secure solar arrays to the earth, extended lead times with low visibility can cascade into construction delays that disrupt remaining construction for months on end.

For EPCs and developers already managing complex timelines, these foundation delays are deal-threatening and could trigger penalty clauses for missed interconnections.

With domestic energy demand continuing to rise, our team recognized that the solar industry didn’t need an incremental fix. It needed a powerful solution rooted in speed, reliability, and precision. That’s when the idea for our steel ground screw was born.

Domestic Steel into Domestic Solar

We aren’t a startup trying to disrupt the solar business; we’re a 220-year-old American manufacturer with a history of working on infrastructure, facility, and defense projects that demand steel strength, performance, and reliability. Our entrance into renewable energy isn’t a pivot, but a logical application of hard-won expertise to a booming US industry that needs it.

To that end, we built a team of leading solar infrastructure experts and prepared to dedicate our New Hampshire facility to the production of a new high-performing solar ground screw foundation and A-frame option for even the toughest terrains. ASA owns all aspects of production, cutting out the disruptions that plague overseas manufacturing.

Vertical Integration Builds Trust

Not only is ASA a domestic company, it’s also vertically integrated for the reliability and transparency needed to provide peace of mind for all involved in the solar project. From raw materials to fabrication to delivery, we control the process to reduce the delays and visibility gaps that typically arise when multiple third parties are involved. As a result, our lead times can be as short as two weeks, for an industry accustomed to waiting months for foundation components. This is a game-changer for developers responding to site changes while trying to avoid schedule derailments. EPCs can order with confidence, knowing materials will arrive as promised and projects stay on track.

For us, short lead times aren’t just about speed, but predictability. ASA has a strong reputation of long-term partnerships and customer service, one which we continue into solar by taking the headache out of foundation materials expectations. But, we recognize none of this matters if the product doesn’t perform well.

Precision Engineering and Strong Performance

Our precision-formed threading technique creates drivability and axial capacity needed across solar foundation terrains. We offer both standard and customizable options compatible with all major tracker, fixed-tilt systems, and cable management configurations. A-frame foundations and assemblies are also available.

The team leading the development of this product has deep experience in solar infrastructure and construction, yet ASA is strictly ground screw-focused, and can deliver without competing with partner OEMs.

Like all of our products, this ground screw is built for long-term performance and aligns with our company’s mission: building a better America through innovation.
