ASA and guests celebrated the expansion of Syracuse-area operations as the new Liverpool facility ramps up production to meet accelerating demand.
When American Steel and Aluminum opened its new 50,000-square-foot production facility on Wetzel Road in Liverpool this past June, the plan was to ramp up steadily. Get the floor humming, bring new processing and fabrication capacity online, and meet the demand we’d been anticipating from customers in data center infrastructure, defense, and renewable energy.
The market had other ideas, and fortunately, we were ready for them.
Since opening, inbound demand has accelerated faster than projected. Data center construction across the Northeast is running at a pace that’s compressing lead times industrywide. Solar developers are racing to secure domestically sourced steel components to meet federal sourcing thresholds. Defense programs are scaling. Customers who were planning their next move a year ago are now executing it, and they need a domestic manufacturer who can keep up.
Opening our second Syracuse-area facility couldn’t have come at a better moment. Central New York, as it turns out, is exactly where this kind of production needs to happen.
“We built this facility because we could see where things were heading,” said Mike DeFilippis, the facility’s general manager, who has been quoted in Spectrum News and the Syracuse Post-Standard on the surge in domestic steel demand. “What’s become clear since we opened is that the timing couldn’t have been better. We feel one step ahead, matching where the market is going with readily available capacity.”
The Liverpool facility adds precision processing capacity, extending ASA’s ability to increase throughput, shorten lead times, and deliver traceable, high-performance steel and aluminum components without foreign supply chain exposure.
This is ASA’s second facility in the Liverpool area. Combined with its first Syracuse-area location and facilities across Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, ASA now operates more than 450,000 square feet of manufacturing and processing space in the Northeast.
Community leaders who turned out for the June 30 ribbon cutting understood the stakes.
Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon was joined by executives from IronHorn Commercial Properties, the development partner behind the Wetzel Road facility, along with customers, colleagues, and local officials who’ve watched this region quietly become a meaningful player in industries most people associate with coasts and tech corridors.
“Today is a great moment for ASA and for Central New York. Manufacturing has always powered this region, and ASA’s expansion proves that strength is only growing,” McMahon said.
“Across the country, AI and advanced technologies are driving a major manufacturing resurgence and CNY is benefiting. ASA’s investment doesn’t just celebrate where we’ve been; it signals where we’re going. With companies like ASA leading the charge, our region’s manufacturing future looks bold, competitive, and full of opportunity.”
That story is still being written. The ribbon is cut, the floor is live, and the team in Liverpool is pushing toward full operational capacity as fast as the work demands, which right now is very fast.
