Last week, ASA marked the start of a 12,000-square-foot expansion at our Saco, Maine facility with Senator Susan Collins, a full-circle moment as we expand production in shipbuilding, data centers, energy, and more.
Thirty years ago, when Senator Collins first took notice of American Steel and Aluminum, we were a general line steel service center, one of many in southern Maine, not particularly different from the competition down the road. Last week, she stood with us again, this time on a construction site, to break ground on a 12,000-square-foot addition to our Saco facility.
A lot has changed between those two moments.
Prior to the ceremony, Senator Collins toured the existing Saco facility, talked with the people running the equipment, and met with company leadership. She spoke to the crowd about what this expansion actually means: more capacity, more jobs, and another vote of confidence in Maine’s manufacturing workforce.
The addition will roughly double our cutting capacity in Saco. About 30 new jobs will come on board in the next couple of months. The work itself, heavy-plate steel and aluminum processing for customers in shipbuilding, defense, industrial manufacturing, and more, will keep landing in Maine instead of overseas.
“ASA has long been a job-creating engine in southern Maine, and its investment in expanding its Saco facility is welcome news for the city and our state,” Senator Collins said at the event. “This project reflects the company’s confidence in Maine’s skilled workforce and will support good jobs, strengthen our manufacturing sector and defense industrial base, and contribute to continued economic growth in the region.”
Saco is one of four ASA facilities in Maine alongside South Portland, Auburn, and West Bath. This addition strengthens all of them by growing the capacity that feeds our customers across the state’s shipbuilding and defense supply chains.
Ground is broken. The crews are moving. And in a few months, new colleagues will join the Saco team.
Companies looking for a domestic steel and aluminum partner with the capacity, quality systems, and supply chain traceability can reach our Maine team directly.
