North American Clean Energy: On Shaky Ground

Robert Souliere of American Steel & Aluminum explains in North American Clean Energy why cheap solar foundations become expensive on difficult sites.

In the May/June 2026 issue of North American Clean Energy, Robert Souliere, Director of Business Development at American Steel & Aluminum, explains why the lowest-cost solar foundation often turns out to be the most expensive one on difficult sites.

Rocky soils, variable geotechnical conditions and remote locations expose every weakness in a foundation system. Small inconsistencies in geometry, coating or material properties turn into refusals, rework and schedule delays, and rigid, globally distributed supply chains make those problems harder to fix once installation has started. The article makes the case for judging foundations on execution certainty rather than unit price, and for vertically integrated, domestic supply that can respond quickly to what crews find in the field.
